  3. If you are cold-emailing, understand that the whole purpose of the email is just to get the professor to bother glancing through your CV. That's it. Professors at top research universities are completely, utterly drowning in email, so: The title and the email should be succinct and to the point.
  4. Professor is probably a night owl who happened to be working at that time anyway. I work at night a lot so if you toss me an email at 11 you just might get a reply. But don't email your profs at night if your replies go to your phone and a late reply would wake you up :P
  5. Professors are often flooded with emails, so if you can make your email easily readable at a glance, it's likelier they'll respond. I'm a big fan of making subjects very literal - ex: "Response requested: would you send X paper?". You can use the body of the email to be provide context and be gracious/ appreciative.
